The port city of Gdansk

We use the first evening directly to walk along the Mottlau river. It was just before sunset and the light at the water was really beautiful.

The next day we explored the city further, walked through the streets, went to St. Mary's Church and were thrilled by the beautiful old town and the many cute colorful little houses.

What is typical in Poland are the so-called milk bars (Bar mleczny). There you can get typical Polish food in large portions, for very cheap prices. Our accommodation was directly above the milk bar "Neptune" and the delicious smells of great food lured us in. You can imagine a bar mleczny like a small canteen, you can see the dishes in advance and order them according to what you see. In addition to the main course you can order a starter and a dessert. As you can see on the following picture, we could hardly hold back. It's hard to believe that we paid only 58 Zloty for all the food and drinks (delicious compote), which is the equivalent of about 13€!

An excursion to Malbork south of Gdansk
But it is also worth visiting the surroundings of Gdansk! We drove to the Marienburg (Malbork), which is called the largest brick building in Europe. By train it was only a short ride and we were already standing in front of the big walls of the castle. Really impressive!
Unfortunately, the queues at the cash desks were so full that we spontaneously decided against visiting the castle from the inside. But there is also a small circular path around the castle buildings and you can walk between the individual buildings, so that we still got a nice impression.

Later, on the way back to Danzig, it poured in torrents. We got completely wet, and that only during the short time we waited on the platform for the train doors to open to get in.
Our trip to Sopot and Gdynia
Another excursion went to Sopot - a spa town north of Danzig. We strolled through the city to the beach, but since the weather was not really inviting for swimming, we walked along the sea in the direction of Gdynia to the so called Eagle Cliffs.

Gdansk was our last tourist destination in Poland. Afterwards we drove on to Szczecinwhere a large part of Tomek's family lives. Of course we spent a lot of time with them there and experienced a lot. We will tell about this in the next Article!
