Taking the ferry to Crete
For the crossing from Athens to Crete we had chosen the cheapest ferry to Chania The ferry left the port of Piraeus at 9:30 p.m. and was supposed to drop us off on the island 9 hours later.
Just finding the right departure point at the port was a task for us, because google maps first led us to a completely different area and when we arrived at the port terminal, the signs there were very misleading. In addition, our tickets said “Pier 2”, but our ship was docked at “Pier 1”. After a few inquiries we finally found our ship and were able to get on board two hours before departure. At boarding we got our temperature measured and had to fill out a questionnaire that included questions about our state of health but also about our past whereabouts.
We had public spaces and no cabin, but there were only a handful of other travelers in the public area, so we could make us some space nicely. Tomek lay down over three seats and was therefore quite comfortable. I, on the other hand, couldn't lie down because I felt sick immediately. But at some point I also fell asleep while sitting. The journey passed quickly, even if I couldn't really sleep through it. And so we reached Crete at 6:30 a.m.
Arrival in Chania and the first days in Crete
At the port south of Chania a bus was waiting for the passengers to take us to the city center. There we still had half the day until we could check into our accommodation. To bridge the time, we sat down by the water at the harbor and enjoyed the sunrise with a view of the lighthouse of Chania.
For the next five hours we strolled through town, had breakfast, just sat on a bench and watched the people. So the time passed very easily, but we were still very happy when we could check into the accommodation and freshen up. We booked this accommodation for three nights. The next day was completely rainy at first and we took care of things like washing clothes and recovered from the previous days. In the next few days we were able to explore Chania and the surrounding area very well.
So on the last day we hiked to several small bays in the west of Chania. Tomek bought diving goggles on the way to be able to observe the underwater world even better. There were small fish in the water that were very curious and poked us in the legs. We stayed at the bay "Iguana Beach" for the longest time and later hiked to a small church that was directly on the mountain by the bay.
In Crete the bus connections and planning are similar to those in Greece. In order to be more flexible, we decided to rent a car again for a week to drive around the west coast of Crete because there is a lot to discover there.
