With the bus to Leptokarya
When we decided in Litochoro to spend the next few days in Leptokarya of course we also looked how we could get there best. The distance between Litochoro and Leptokarya is actually only 11km, but we were too stingy for a taxi. Instead we wanted to take the bus again. The only connection we could put together using the timetables posted in Litochoro was that we would first take the bus 20km in the opposite direction to Katerini and then take a bus to Leptokarya from there. So we bought a ticket to Katerini from the bus driver and got on. He was clearly interested in where we come from, what we're doing and where we're going. When we told him that we wanted to go to Leptokarya, he just said "Oh, that's the wrong way!" And an old lady who was on the bus with us only said pityingly "Wrong bus!". We explained that we could not find any other information about bus connections to Leptokarya and would therefore take this detour. The bus driver was very surprised and we asked ourselves if we are just too stupid to understand the system. So if one of you has traveled through Greece with a backpack and had completely different experiences: please let us know!
The bus driver was really helpful and offered us that he could just drop us off on the way and called one of his bus driver colleagues to pick us up on his way to Leptokarya and told him that we had already paid more for the bus tickets with him than necessary. We gratefully agreed and shortly afterwards found ourselves again at the same abandoned bus stop outside of Litochoro, where we had already been stranded when we arrived. But this time everything went smoothly, half an hour later the promised bus full of school children came, between whom we were allowed to squeeze and we really didn't have to pay anything more.
Relaxation for our legs
Our plan for Leptokarya was to give our legs a bit of relaxation and enjoy the summer in a completely relaxed manner. We also spent the day of arrival directly on the beach, which was less than 100 meters away from our accommodation. Based on the many loungers and hotels, we assume that under different circumstances it must be a lot more crowded here. But only a handful of people were on the beach with us. The water was pleasantly warm, but still very refreshing with the outside temperature above 30°C.
The next day started in a very special way - we got up very early to watch the sunrise over the sea. But we didn't stay alone for long:
But soon we went on a discovery tour again
After a great start in the morning, the rest of the day was really nice - I had read before that Platamonas Castle is only a few km from Leptokarya and we hiked there, looked at the ruins of the castle, enjoyed the wide view to mountains and sea and hiked back to Leptokarya. In total we were on the road for more than 5 hours and that in the heat! So we went to the beach for the rest of the day. Tomek even met a blue nettle jellyfish in the water, that was cool!
Anyone who knows us knows that such beach days are very relaxing for us, but that our desire for the next adventure quickly sets off again.
And so we continued our journey after 2 nights in Leptokarya to the Meteora cliffs.
