After 2 nights in Leptokarya, we continued to travel by train to Kalambaka. It's a pretty small town with less than 10,000 inhabitants, but the special thing about this town is that it is right at the foot of the famous Meteora cliffs . In the past, a total of 24 monasteries were built on the sandstone cliffs, six of which are still inhabited by monks or nuns and which can also be visited. Some can already be seen from below, some are harder - others are easier to reach.
In order to be able to spend two full days of hiking in the region around the Meteora rocks, we had originally planned to be there for three nights. As soon as we arrived at the train station and on the way to our accommodation, we could see the rocks from afar and we were really impressed. The first walk to the rocks also really flashed me, so in retrospect I can call our time there one of the absolute highlights of the trip. It may not quite come across in the pictures, but standing right under the huge rocks is really a magical feeling!
But the next day was a bit different than planned - Greece was hit by a Mediterranean hurricane (a "Medicane")! We were very lucky that in Kalambaka it only rained heavily all day, while other regions, which were not that far away, had to deal with floods and strong storms. We stayed in our accommodation the whole day and watched the weather from our terrace (which, by the way, gave us a great view of the rocks).
The next day the air was still very humid! We therefore considered spontaneously extending our stay in Kalambaka and could easily arrange everything with our landlady over the phone. We were lucky that the accommodation wasn't booked by someone else and we could just stay there for two more days.
After the Medicane the weather in Greece was again at its best. This enabled us to really enjoy the hikes through the rock formations. There are also many tours that are offered and buses went up from the town center to the monasteries, but we found it more interesting to hike a bit and get close to the rocks. On our first hike to the Holy Trinity Monastery, we saw a few other hikers, but the way up was still very calm. When we arrived at the monastery, it was a bit more crowded, as you can get there easily by car. We assume that many drive their cars from monastery to monastery. We found the view of the rocks just spectacular!
The next day we went on another hike, this time we walked north from Kalambaka towards the village of Kastraki and then turned onto a hiking trail. We walked past the rocks again and had a great view of the formations and the monasteries.
